No-cost WPATH letters

Birdy Psychology does not charge for WPATH letters. Birdy Psychology believes that mental health providers should not be an additional barrier to medical and surgical gender affirming services. Where possible, Birdy Psychology will advocate with you to engage with the informed consent model with your providers, to minimize gatekeeping of life saving healthcare. Birdy Psychology challenges the pathologisation of trans bodies and advocates for free or low cost, accessible healthcare for trans people.

Session costs

It costs $230 to access an individual session (50 mins) or supervision (60 mins) with Birdy Psychology. There is the option for sliding scale fees for those who are financially disadvantaged to access specialist sexual health and gender affirming psychological care at a more affordable rate. Sliding scale places are limited and will need to be discussed at the time of scheduling your session. Please note, Birdy Psychology is not currently taking new patients and does not keep a waitlist. But please reach out if you’d like a list of similar practitioners who can support you with your needs.

MEET BIRDY PSYCHOLOGY (aka, K)

K Fraser (pronouns: they/them/k) is the face behind Birdy Psychology. Based on Muwinina Country, Nipaluna, K is working solely online. K is a white, neuroqueer, trans, disabled, secular psychologist.

Experience

K has been working in the field of counseling and psychology since 2010. Starting out as a Crisis Counselor at Lifeline whilst completing their Bachelor of Psychology, they’ve since worked in sexual assault and interpersonal violence settings, youth-specific trauma and addiction settings, trans and queer youth counseling, supporting parents of trans kids in groups and private counseling, facilitating school training and education services on supporting trans students, facilitating group supervision with school counselors and educators in trans affirming school support, facilitating individual and group supervision with health professionals working in trans affirming care, as well as working as part of the clinical team at The Gender Centre.

Alongside their current doctorate and clinical work at Birdy Psychology, K is also a university educator, working as a Lecturer and Unit Coordinator in the Faculty of Medicine and Health’s Sexual and Reproductive Health program. K coordinates the Sex, Gender & Sexuality unit at The University of Sydney and delivers guest lectures across the program on trans+ health.

Education and research

K holds a Bachelor of Psychology, Advanced Masters of Sexual and Reproductive Health and is currently completing their PhD.

K completed their Advanced Master of Science in Medicine (HIV, STIs and Sexual Health) in 2022. As part of their Advanced Masters, K completed research on queer experience of heterosexism and the mediating role of community connectedness and resilience.

K is currently completing their PhD full-time with the University of Sydney, Sydney Medical School. Their research focuses on genderqueer and trans community, and the impacts of cisgenderism and cissexism.  https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2492-7500

Community work and volunteering

K is a big advocate for engaging in community care and advocating for accessible care through volunteering and participating in grassroots movements to establish equitable, community-driven services and resources. K co-founded NFP charity Illawarra Shoalhaven Gender Alliance and is a board member of Equality Tasmania. K is currently in the process of establishing a network of clinicians who are committed to providing free and accessible gender affirming letters to support with medical and surgical care. If you are a healthcare provider interested in being a part of this network, please reach out.

Theory-informed practice

K’s clinical work stems from trans and queer theory and therefore K doesn’t believe that therapy can be apolitical. With K you can expect culturally sensitive, trauma informed, intersectional therapy that acknowledges systems of oppression, sociopolitical contexts, and to engage in decolonizing practices.

K’s language around pleasure, empowerment and sex has been shaped through mentors, supervisors, therapists and friendships that are grounded in queer theory and intersectional feminism. Their work with gender/sex and relationship diverse communities is a massive driver both professionally and personally, where you will find them protesting at rallies or to politicians to ensure their voice is contributing to the causes they believe in.

K believes that the discrimination and oppression faced by trans and queer community are connected to the violence and discrimination faced by Black, Brown and Indigenous communities globally, medical violence faced by intersex community, discrimination and ongoing violence and isolation of disabled communities, unfair legal discrimination and lack of protections for sex workers, ongoing discrimination and violence and lack of protections for religious minorities, medical and systemic violence and isolation of fat people, and those forced to survive genocide and ethnic cleansing. K recognizes the ongoing impact of capitalism, imperialism and white supremacy against oppressed groups, and the planet, and is committed to the movements taking place to fight these oppressive systems and structures.

K acknowledges in their day to day practice the role that terroristic colonisation plays, and the ongoing discrimination and disadvantages our First Nations people are faced with. They commit to fighting against the colonial, racist system that impacts Palawa and Muwinina and all First Nations people across so-called-Australia and across the globe.

Therapeutic modalities

K works in a few different modalities including Psychosexual Therapy, Schema Therapy, Narrative Therapy and EMDR. K often takes an eclectic approach and will discuss what models may best fit your needs or goals in therapy. K also believes in encouraging everyone to find the best fit. In your sessions, modalities will be explained and explored at a depth where you will be able to make informed choices about what therapy you’d like and have the literacy to choose what works best for you. K might suggest alternative therapists depending on your needs and intentions for therapy, so that you can get the most out of your therapeutic supports.

Memberships

K is a member of Australian Society of Sex Educators, Researchers and Therapists (ASSERT NSW), World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH), Australian Professional Association of Transgender Health (AUSPATH), and Society of Australian Sexologists (SAS).
